Bat Rolling 101 – The Process
Most companies determine the maximum rolling pressure and start at that pressure. This is totally incorrect and usually causes durability problems and also potentially causes your paint to spider web prematurely. You should roll bats in 3-4 progressive compression points (depending on the type of bat). After you’ve rolled your bat it will have approximately 300 passes through the machine. You should not heat your bat before rolling since it does not provide any additional benefits, in fact it actually hurts the rolling process.
Rolling does not shorten the life of your bat
Once you bat has been rolled it will have the same durability it did before rolling. It will however be performing at its highest level. Please also be careful with who you have roll your bats. Make sure you choose a company that offers you the choice of which rolling method they use. This indicates they have the needed experience to give you OPTIMAL performance increases.

When rolling a bat, it’s placed between two/three rollers of a Bat Rolling Machine and then pressure is applied to the rollers like a vice. As the bat passes through the rollers the bats fibers are stretched out and the glue holding the layers together is broken down. The is the same thing that happens as you take hours of batting practice. This causes the fibers to become more flexible which greatly improves the bat’s trampoline effect. This trampoline effect is what produces the batted ball speed and distance. It will also widen the sweet spot of the bat which will make you a more consistent hitter.
Types of Bat Rolling Machines
There are 2 types of Bat Rolling Machines that are currently being used. Those types are Perpendicular and Parallel. Perpendicular Bat Roller roll your bat perpendicular to the barrel and the Parallel rollers roll parallel to the barrel. The perpendicular type is the preferred method of rolling. Bats are designed to be compressed in small areas similar to hitting a ball. Parallel rolling machines allow you to roll the entire barrel all at once. The only benefit to doing this is to be able to roll your bat faster. It is NOT recommended to roll via the parallel method as it MAY too much stress on the barrel of the bat if not performed by an experienced company. It’s recommended that you find a company that offers multiple options of which bat rolling method is used on your bat. This ensures they have the needed experience to give you the desired results without potentially damaging your bat.
